“Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. Life Is Not Fair

When was the last time this pout - stimulating thought stirred your feelings? There are many circumstances in life that the right reply seems to be, “LIFE IS NOT FAIR”. What should be our response to this phrase that seems to fit our experience?

“Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us” (Ecc 1:10). This question of the wise man becomes very interesting when we apply it to new year. Is the new year really new? In many ways the new year of 2012 will probably be a lot like other years if the Lord tarries. The seasons will come and go. The earth will be planted and harvested. People will be born and people will die. The problems of mankind like disease, crime, political upheaval, and environmental woes will continue to exist.

In Daniel 1 we find the story of an exceptional young man. He had been chosen by the king’s own delegate because there was no blemish found in him; he was well favored, skillful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge. He was chosen out of the very best that Babylon had to offer, and Babylon ruled the world. He was chosen to stand in the palace of the most powerful ruler of the world. Power and prestige were within his grasp. Certainly, to those looking on, Daniel was in an enviable position. What more could his heart wish for?

“The Power of Pride.” So proclaimed the bumper stickers that popped up around the United States after the September 11 attacks and stuck around for years since. Adorned with an American flag, they appealed to the patriotic fervor that swept the nation. “We are the best,” they seemed to say. “Believe in ourselves, and we will come out on top.”

Beep, someone texted; ding, another email to follow up on; ring, someone calling with a question; bleep, an instant message from a friend; waa, the baby cries for our attention; and on and on.… In our busy, fast paced, highly connected society, the need to be still and know God is greater than ever before.

Physical wars have dominated history’s attention from the time Cain killed his brother Abel, right down to the present day. This really should be no surprise to us. Jesus told us in Matthew 24:6, “And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.”
